Greece

What a start to your sailing holiday. Athens has it all, culture, nightlife, corner cafes for people watching, great shopping and plenty of marinas. Arrive on an early flight and take in the Acropolis and Parthenon before boarding. Off to see nearby islands of Aegina, Poros and Hydra or a bit further afield to Kea.

Plenty of anchorages off the mainland too, Faliron, Kalamaki, Sounion and plenty more. Scattered along the west coast of Greece, the Ionian islands boast Corfu and Kefalonia amongst the better known.

Less well known but stunningly beautiful are Ithaca, Paxos, Letkada and Kythira, with sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, they create a stunning backdrop for your sailing holiday. The Summer heat is kept in check by the Meltemi winds although this has aided the development of many windsurfing centers around the islands. Ideal for those new to sailing holidays or those looking for easy sailing.

Cyclades meaning circle from the Greek word Cyclos has some of the most beautiful of the Greek islands. Mykonos, Naxos and Santorini to name just three are all different and interesting. The last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August are the hottest. Other than that time the weather is generally pleasant through the summer with sea breezes taking the sting out of the constant sunshine. The sailing is more challenging with stronger winds and bigger seas that build quickly through the morning. The best way to see Greek Islands is by sail boat. Arriving at an island jetty, with blue skies, clear waters and Summer sunshine.

Dodecanese meaning 12 islands, includes the well known Rhodes and Kos, but also the lesser known Symi, Tilos, Nisyros, Astipalea, Lipsi and more are set between the Cyclades group and the Turkish Turquoise coast. The prevailing Summer wind is the Meltemi which starts to show sporadically in June but builds July through September reaching between force 4-6 and occasionally force 7 but that doesn't last long. At it's height the Meltemi can help produce short steep seas which are uncomfortable. Of all the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes and Kos are the most popular sailing holiday starting points.
